Globalization
The topic of globalization has been very interesting to me.
It is hard to decide whether or not it is a bad thing or a good thing because I
can see valid arguments on both ends of the discussion. I have seen
globalization in my own life since my father was born and raised in the
Netherlands and I have been fortunate enough spend a fair amount of time in
Europe. It is interesting to see how the cultures have all mixed together. What
was once considered the Old Dutch culture has all but disappeared, today most
of the teenagers today watch and listen to American media. In the reverse it is
also interesting to see how the styles I see in Europe are all being worn in
American six months later. With the EU in Europe most of the countries it seems,
have become more like states in the US. People are able to travel freely within
the EU so the cultures have mixed together even more so. Globalization is
important because it allows us to become a global society similar to a Zion we
as members of the church are supposed to strive for. It can also become
dangerous to other countries when a more dominate nation controls a less
powerful nation or uses them to gain some sort of advantage from helping them. America
is often looked as an “older brother” by other nations or a “world police” as
though we use other countries to our own advantage. It seems that globalization
is a balancing act but can anybody ever get the balance just right? Can we help
other countries without taking advantage of them and imposing our culture on
the people? I think globalization is necessary but it does not have to be
necessarily evil.
I think it's really awesome how we can travel once in Europe too. There are so many old and different cultures that you can see in such a (relatively) short time/distance. It's also cool how it unites so many different types of people without making them all the same.
ReplyDeleteI love your personal connection. I also see how globalization can be a good and a bad thing like you stated. Awesome blog.
